Position Title: Garden Installation Team Member
Hours: Full-Time, year round,  Generally 8-4pm but largely dependent on jobs

Overview:

As the Foreman on the Backyard Eats Installation Team, you’re not just filling a role—you’re stepping into an opportunity to build something and directly control your earning potential. You’ll operate at the center of our installation operation, partnering closely with Sales, Design, and Production to bring high-end edible gardens to life efficiently and profitably. You’ll lead crews in the field, make real-time decisions, manage site logistics, and ensure projects are executed to our exacting standards—on time and on budget. The better you plan, lead, and execute, the more value you create for the company and the more you earn.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who wants autonomy, accountability, and growth. You’ll be building edible garden spaces, training and mentoring team members, and solving challenges as they arise—all while developing the skills to run projects like a business. Requirements

  • 2 years experience combined in landscaping, construction or similar outdoor work
  • 2 years experience crew management
  • Ability to perform consistent heavy lifting
  • Ability to work in all weather
  • Valid drivers license

Pay & Benefits:

  • Full pay salary potential at $70,000+
  • $24/hour base pay, full time, year round

Schedule:

This is a full-time, year round and all weather role. Our normal schedule is Monday-Friday, 8 hour days. The day to day schedule is largely dependent on the job being performed and how you as Foreman decide to approach its completion. Overtime is available at certain times of year and weekend work is required a couple times of year during planting seasons.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of garden installers to compete builds and renovations
  • Communicate with clients and Operations Manager regarding job timelines
  • Supervise, train and organize installation team on site
  • Maintain inventory by checking and ordering
  • Supervise & review installation crews time and attendance
  • Maintain vehicles & equipment needs by checking fluids and servicing
  • Clean and sharpen tools and clean sprayers and other equipment
  • Meet with Operations Manager for performance reviews and growth opportunitie

Position Title: Edible Garden Field Apprenticeship
Season: Flexible Full-Time, March/May – August/September

Overview:

This seasonal apprenticeship provides hands-on exposure to the edible landscaping industry. Apprentices rotate through installation, maintenance, and shop/office support, gaining practical skills in all aspects of food gardening. It’s a great stepping stone toward a full-time role on Backyard Eats’ installation and maintenance teams.

Requirements

  • Heavy lifting (+50lbs) and physical work in hot & cold conditions
  • Valid driver’s license & ability to get to shop
  • Passion for sharing the homegrown food experience with others

Pay: $20-22/hr depending on experience, $60/month cell phone reimbursement

Perks: Access to employee run garden & food forest enjoyment & harvest

Responsibilities:

-Assist with garden installations, including site prep, construction, and planting.
• Support ongoing maintenance of client gardens: weeding, pruning, harvesting, and seasonal care.
• Rotate through the shop and warehouse to learn materials prep and equipment handling.
• Gain exposure to scheduling, logistics, and light office/administrative support.
• Learn organic gardening practices and safe tool/equipment use.
• Work closely with experienced team members in a fast-paced, outdoor environment.
• Contribute to the success of client gardens while learning the business side of edible landscaping.

Position Title: Edible Garden Sub/Volunteer

Overview:

Are you interested in getting your hands in the dirt with professional gardeners from time to time? We have  seasonal and short term demands sometimes and are always looking for folks willing to fill in during busy planting times or with other seasonal support. -Support ongoing planting & maintenance of client gardens: weeding, pruning, harvesting, and seasonal care.

Join our team of professionals creating a new industry in Philadelphia. We design, install, and maintain attractive and functional gardens that yield high-quality fruit & produce in our clients backyards. We are a fast paced & growing business looking for long term employees to help continue to build Backyard Eats into a key driver in broadening the participation in the homegrown food movement for our employees, clients & communities.

Our install crews build the gardens, and our maintenance team plants and maintains them. We call it full service food gardening, and it has allowed us to deliver successful gardening experiences and change lives for hundreds of clients in the Philadelphia area over the last 8 years. We are looking to add to our team of gardeners and professionals.

Each position is an opportunity to work alongside skilled craftsmen, designers, horticulturalists, and professional staff and management to aid in building a custom, high end product for appreciative clientele. You will learn a lot about working in a small, growing business, with all its associated fun & challenges, as you help co-invent Backyard Eats. Location

Our shop is located in Flourtown, PA. All employees arrive at the shop each morning and depart to work sites from here.

Trial Period

For every role, we include a 30-day trial period to get to know each other and decide if we are a good fit for each other.
