Join our team of professionals creating a new industry in Philadelphia. We design, install, and maintain attractive and functional gardens that yield high-quality fruit & produce for our clients in their own backyards as well as schools and community organizations in the area.
We are a fast paced & growing business looking for employees to help continue to build Backyard Eats. Our goal is to be a key driver in broadening the participation in the homegrown food movement for our employees, clients & communities.
Our install crews build the gardens, and our maintenance team plants and maintains them. We call it full service food gardening, and it has allowed us to deliver successful gardening experiences and change lives for hundreds of clients in the Philadelphia area over the last 9 years.
This position is an opportunity to work alongside skilled craftsmen, designers, horticulturalists, and professional staff and management to aid in building a custom, high end product for appreciative clientele. You will learn a lot about working in a small, growing business, with all its associated fun & challenges, as you help co-invent Backyard Eats.

Requirements
- 2 year experience combined in construction or landscaping or similar outdoor work
- Consistent heavy lifting
- Ability to work in all weather
- Valid drivers license
Pay & Benefits
- $20-23/hour based on experience. Raises, advancement and bonuses available based on performance
- $150/person/month health insurance subsidy

- Accumulated time off (2 weeks year one, 3 weeks thereafter)
- Cell phone reimbursement – $60/month (will use phone for work)
- Personal vehicle mileage reimbursement if needed (we have our own trucks)

Schedule
This is a full-time, year round and all weather role. Our normal schedule is Monday-Friday, 8 hour days. Overtime is available at certain times of year and weekend work is required a couple times of year.
Position Summary
As an Installation Team Member at Backyard Eats, you’ll help bring dream gardens to life—transforming bare yards into thriving, edible landscapes that feed and inspire. This is a hands-on, craft-based role where you’ll blend teamwork and practical skill to build high-quality garden systems for appreciative clients throughout the Philadelphia area.
You’ll gain real experience across a wide range of disciplines including carpentry, irrigation, stonework, horticulture, garden design, and project management. From building raised beds and trellises to laying out irrigation and fencing, every project is a chance to learn, grow, and take pride in something you created with your own hands.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, values craftsmanship, and wants to be part of a purpose-driven team. You’ll see the direct impact of your work each day and help deliver meaningful experiences to families, schools, and communities.
At peak planting times, you may also assist with seasonal planting and garden maintenance alongside the rest of the Backyard Eats team—giving you a full-circle view of our food gardening systems from installation to harvest.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
As an Installation Team Member at Backyard Eats, you’ll be part builder, part artist, and part ambassador for a more homegrown way of living. You’ll help transform underused backyards into beautiful, productive food gardens that enrich the lives of families, schools, and communities across the Philadelphia region.
You’ll work alongside a close-knit team of skilled installers, craftspeople, and designers to create functional, high-end garden spaces from the ground up—literally. Every day will bring a new location, a new challenge, and the satisfaction of building something meaningful with your own hands.
Here’s what your role will include:
Every Day
- Build custom garden installations from start to finish—laying out beds, installing irrigation, fencing, trellising, and more—based on proven Backyard Eats designs and systems.
- Start your day at our Flourtown shop, then travel in a company vehicle to client sites throughout the area.
- Represent Backyard Eats professionally in the field, communicating clearly with clients and office staff to ensure smooth projects and excellent service.
Every Week
- Participate in weekly team meetings to share ideas, coordinate logistics, and stay aligned with company priorities.
- Coordinate with the Office Manager to optimize your schedule and keep client communication running smoothly.
Every Month
- Help maintain company trucks and tools—checking fluids, cleaning equipment, and ensuring everything’s job-ready.
- Meet with the Installation Foreman for performance reviews, support, and opportunities to grow your skillset and role.
- Pitch in with seasonal planting or maintenance work when needed—it’s all part of being a collaborative, adaptable team member.
You’ll also contribute to general shop tasks and have the opportunity to work on exciting seasonal and community projects.

You’ll work closely with the Installation Foreman to ensure each project is completed on time, on budget, and to our exacting standards. In this role, you’ll help direct the crew onsite, keep projects moving smoothly, and set the tone for quality craftsmanship and positive client experiences.
This is a hands-on position that blends technical skill with leadership. You’ll help construct garden beds, install irrigation and fencing, and coordinate site logistics, while also training new team members and solving on-the-ground challenges. You’ll grow in your ability to lead projects, communicate with clients and the office, and uphold Backyard Eats’ core values in the field.

Daily Responsibilities
- Arrive at Flourtown shop and help prepare tools, materials, and truck for the day’s job(s)
- Assist the Foreman in leading the install crew on-site: setting pace, delegating tasks, and ensuring quality
- Build and install garden beds, trellises, fencing, and irrigation systems according to spec
- Help train and support team members, modeling efficiency and precision
- Communicate proactively with the Foreman about site conditions, changes, or challenges
- Maintain a safe, clean, and respectful job site
- Represent Backyard Eats professionally when interacting with clients
Weekly Responsibilities
- Attend and contribute to team meetings, bringing feedback from the field
- Coordinate with the office to align on project timing, material needs, and client expectations
- Support the Foreman in resolving project delays or redesign needs
- Monitor tool and material inventory and report supply needs
- Collaborate with team members across departments during seasonal planting push or community projects
Monthly Responsibilities
- Perform preventative maintenance checks on tools, vehicles, and jobsite gear
- Meet with the Foreman or leadership team for performance check-ins and leadership development
- Support onboarding of new install crew members with hands-on training
- Identify recurring issues or opportunities for improvement and contribute to refining installation processes
- Assist with seasonal tasks at the shop or food forest as needed

This role blends hands-on gardening with meaningful client interaction, as you visit residential and community gardens weekly to ensure they stay productive, beautiful, and thriving.
You’ll be responsible for key seasonal tasks including weeding, pruning, trellising, organic pest and disease control, harvesting, and coaching clients on how to get the most from their garden. This isn’t just upkeep—it’s mentorship, care, and the delivery of a deeply personal service that connects people to their food and land.
You’ll gain real-world experience in garden design, horticulture, irrigation, project management, and client communication. Over time, you’ll develop the skills and confidence to manage your own route, make independent decisions in the field, and become a trusted expert to our clients.

- Interact professionally and warmly with clients, while keeping our office team updated on your progress and observations.
Every Week
- Join weekly team huddles to share updates, learn from each other, and stay connected to the broader Backyard Eats mission.
- Collaborate with the Office Manager to fine-tune your schedule and ensure timely, thoughtful communication with clients.
Every Month
- Help keep company vehicles and tools in top shape by checking fluids, cleaning, and making minor fixes as needed.
- Meet with the Maintenance Lead for supportive performance check-ins, skill-building, and conversations about your personal and professional growth.
Additionally, all employees contribute to general shop tasks and have opportunities to participate in seasonal planting, community service days, and team development activities.

Location
Our shop is located in Flourtown, PA. All employees arrive at the shop each morning and depart to work sites from here.
Trial Period
For every role, we include a 90-day trial period to get to know each other and decide if we are a good fit for each other.
